Gearing up for 2026 - NL #19
Hello Everyone,
It’s me, Morgan - I will be supporting Florian with our newsletters moving forward!
First off, sorry for the hiatus in newsletters. We’ve been dealing with a significant increase in workload in our regular jobs.
But in the meantime?
We’ve been busy behind the scenes.
Let’s get you up to speed —
1. We’re planning our trip for June 2026!
Similar dates, similar itinerary.
It will be the pilot of an Undergraduate course offered at Penn State & Makerere University.
We think that structure will be easier to sustain as a recurring event. The experience of students will help market the course.
Additionally, we are making it easier for volunteers to sign up for an existing trip that’s already scheduled!
More details and news (including merch) to come as we hash out the details and launch the 2026 June itinerary!
2. Shout-out to John Hunwick!
Huge congratulations to our very own John Hunwick—a true legend—on scoring the “Lifetime Tourism Achiever” award at the Ekkula Sustainable Tourism Awards!
If you’ve ever swapped stories with John or teamed up with RTS on a trekking trip, you know he’s at the heart of eco-tourism in the Rwenzori mountains!
John might hail from Australia, but he’s been shaking up the adventure scene in Uganda since the ‘90s, dreaming up new trails and supporting local communities.
Thanks to John, our partnership with RTS has opened the door for Ski Club Uganda to explore some of the world’s most breathtaking mountain routes.
We’re pumped to celebrate John’s big win and grateful for all the epic experiences our clubs have created together. Next time you hit the mountains, give a nod to John—he’s made a lasting mark for adventurers everywhere!
3.SCU movie
Thanks to Stuart Tibaweswa from National Geographic, our mini-movie is close to being done.
Stay tuned (it will be featured on our webiste homeapge once it’s ready)!
4. Update on the tree planting app
You already know that we planted 1400+ trees in June 2025 and that Shafiq has created data collection app, but we want to give you guys an even closer look!
Shafiq is working on an updated, user-frinedly version of the app, that will allow us to track the trees’ progress and add maintenance-related notes, in addition to their types and locations.
So you can follow the journey of our seedlings with us!
5. Support our work - #SCU2026
As we roll into 2026, we’re keeping it simple: more trees, more people in gumboots, and more muddy, happy days along the Nyamwamba with our crew and RTS partners.
With your help, Ski Club Uganda can plant more seedlings, support local guides and students, and keep building climate resilience in the Rwenzori Mountains.
Chip in, share this with a friend, or just hit reply and say hi—we love hearing from you!
Thanks for sticking around - more to come!
